Craig Primer, Idaho National Laboratory Plant Modernization Lead for the LWRS Program, and Ash Massoudi, CEO of NextAxiom (NxA) co-authored a forward-looking article in Nuclear News magazine on how new technology will enable artificial intelligence applications within the nuclear industry.

The Idaho National Laboratory Light Water Reactor Sustainability Program and NextAxiom are collaborating to define an open specification for a Virtual Resource Management Framework (VRMF). VRMF will enable the widescale adoption of AI within the nuclear industry. The VRMF design and its open specification will leverage the many AI/ML research initiatives within the LWRS Program, such as remote monitoring, anomaly detection, computer vision, and NLP applications, together with NextAxiom’s expertise in innovative software design and development, such as computer-guided work and silo-free applications.

The VRMF acts as a gateway, seamlessly connecting people to the appropriate plant resources and business processes to successfully complete their work. By integrating AI/ML applications that continuously monitor and automatically alert the organization of conditions that need action, employees can focus their time on meaningful activities while leveraging the Virtual Assistant in their everyday tasks.

The article noted that at the heart of VRMF lies the concept of a Virtual Resource. A Virtual Resource represents the information, actions, and AI focused on a particular concept or domain. A Virtual Resource can represent physical objects such as circulating water pump 1-01, a class of objects such as motor-operated valves, or an intangible resource such as an operational risk assessor. A Virtual Resource Manager (VRM) manages Virtual Resources and seamlessly integrates all static and streamed information related to the plant resource. VRM continuously monitors and automatically initiates relevant actions based on business rules and their associated AI analytics.

All Virtual Resources have access to plant information systems, while the VRMF provides a unified gateway for domain-specific AI to plug in and seamlessly access Virtual Resource information and actions. The VRMF specification provides for a built-in user experience that allows access to any Virtual Resource. The User Experience (UX) of the VRM mobile app includes visualization of Virtual Resource information, voice commands into Virtual Resource actions, Virtual Resource event notifications, information trending, and a context-aware Virtual Assistant. In this way, on the backend, the VRMF acts as an agile point of access to all plant information systems across resources, business processes, and AI solutions while on the front-end the Virtual Assistant provides employees with an intuitive interface to all Virtual Resources.

Computer-Guided Work a New Driver for Compliance & Cost Reductions in Nuclear

Applying computer guidance to work changes the economics of work by contextualizing data, where contextualized data becomes information and information becomes actionable.

When it comes to computer-guided navigation, we look to our GPS app for seamless guidance. It provides granular, step-by-step directions while it tracks our position and progress towards our destination. It superimposes relevant information such as the location of restaurants and the lowest price gas stations on route. One of these days, it will even read us the menu of a selected restaurant on our path while placing an order as we drive towards it.

Can computers guide us during the performance of our daily work in a similar fashion? Can they provide us with relevant information and access to otherwise siloed data and functions in the context of the task at hand?

They can do all of that and much more. Consider the following nuclear outage scenario: In the middle of a refueling outage, John is inspecting a snubber as he is performing a procedure that is being guided by a computer program on a tablet. On step 26, he chooses the radio button signifying an UNSAT inspection. He adds some comments, takes a photo of the snubber, annotates the problem area and attaches it to the step. The moment he marks step 26 as complete, a seamless and real-time cascade of notifications, automations, events and actions follow.

Barbara, the outage manager in the OCC, is notified since she had subscribed to all UNSAT inspection events at the beginning of the outage. With a simple click on the notification in her Work Monitoring Dashboard, the Computer-Guided Procedure that John is performing opens on step 26, and Barbara examines the attached photos.

In addition to the notification, when John completed step 26, a snubber evaluation and repair work order managed by a Computer- Guided Workflow was automatically generated and the first step of the workflow was assigned to Clint, John’s supervisor. Clint launches the workflow from his Computer- Guided Work Portal to assess the impact of the associated work order on the outage schedule. He launches a Computer-Guided Form, attached to the first workflow step, that checks multiple backend systems. The dynamic information in the form indicates that one of the required parts is not in inventory as it was allocated to another procedure; however, it also indicates that the allocated part was released by the computer-guidance system because the associated steps using the part were N/A’ed for that procedure. Clint, on-the-fly, inserts a new workflow step after step 1 to arrange for the transfer of the part to the location of the new snubber work order and assigns that step to James. James is notified that he has urgent work waiting for him in his work portal. Barbara is also notified of the additional work.

Computer guidance is applicable beyond maintenance and operations; every employee in the workforce can benefit from computer- guided work with seamless access to relevant information when performing any business process.

Improved Safety & Compliance

Most of us are old enough to remember using a paper map to navigate in an unfamiliar city. Looking back, it was time-consuming and often daunting. In the same way a GPS app eliminates the cognitive burden of following a printed map, step-by-step computer guidance of work reduces the cognitive load on the workforce and thereby improves both safety and work productivity.

Because all aspects of work are now guided by a computer program, the software automates and enforces context-sensitive rules, increasing compliance and improving safety while slashing the cost of assurance. But perhaps the biggest consequence of a software program shadowing all aspects of processes= and work performance at a step-wise level, is the capture and generation of new “performance data”.

Granular Performance Data Guiding Process Transformation

Because work is digitally guided at a granular step-level, the software automatically captures and records detailed information about the state of performance. Information such as the specific performer, data captured by the performer, step cycle times, notification events, delays, holds, the amount of rework in a process workflow and total labor is immediately made available to the entire enterprise.

In a continuous improvement cycle, the captured data can be automatically trended and visualized. The deviations in performance can be easily identified and analyzed. The first phase of the implementation will be "paper elimination" using the NextAxiom^® eWP product. The expected outcome of this phase is to replace the current paper-based process for maintenance work packages with a mobile software solution that runs on tablets. NextAxiom^® partnered with Idaho National Laboratory and Arizona Public Service on a use case of the hyperService^® Platform, the world’s most advanced microservices platform, for enabling a Seamless Digital Environment. Prior to the demonstration of the use case, systems for detecting equipment anomalies were based on time-series process data and these systems were expensive and labor-intensive to maintain. This project used machine learning to analyze and learn the interdependencies between thousands of plant, system and component parameters. The Seamless Digital Environment enabled with NextAxiom^® software then continually monitored these data inputs in order to detect and alert on incremental changes in plant performance for human analysis. The system coupled this analytic engine with an integrated dashboard that provides work history, design change modifications, current scheduled work information, Corrective Action Program information and Equipment Reliability program information for the affected components and systems.

DOE’s Mobile Work Package for Utilities Exclusively Available from NextAxiom^®

NextAxiom^® Technology, Inc., a software and solutions provider that enables silo-free automation, today announced the general availability of the first-ever Mobile Work Package (MWP) designed for the rigors of the nuclear industry.

NextAxiom^® Technology, Inc., a software and solutions provider that enables silo-free automation, today announced the general availability of the first-ever Mobile Work Package (MWP) designed for the rigors of the nuclear industry. Jointly developed with Savannah River Nuclear Solutions (SRNS), under contract with the U.S. Department of Energy, MWP has been successfully in production at SRNS, and is now available as a packaged application to other utilities under exclusive licensing from NextAxiom^®.

In today’s highly regulated environment, MWP uses the innovative hyperService® Platform, the world’s most advanced microservices platform, and mobile devices to eliminate the need for paper documents while it improves workforce efficiency and safety with real-time information. The first MWP rollout at a single site with SRNS saw a $2.7 million annual cost savings and the payback period was under one year.

“The Mobile Work Package has been such a success at SRNS that we wanted to share it with others in the nuclear industry,” said Peggy Davis, Senior Vice President of Support Services for SRNS. “We are encouraged that through this transfer of technology, others may be able to benefit from the government’s investment and the excellent work that’s been done on this application.”

“From a worker perspective, it’s very effective,” said Janis Love Piper, a first line maintenance supervisor for SRNS. “You don’t spend a lot of time chasing down documents; since it’s electronic, someone can look at the work package from a job site miles away. They don’t have to come back to a central facility if they need more prints or procedures, they just need access to a docking system or wireless connectivity somewhere and they can have what they need in a matter of minutes.”

MWP automates the entire paper-intensive process for work orders and associated maintenance processes. MWP allows planners, mechanics and maintenance managers to focus on the job at hand regardless of the underlying applications or the status of network connectivity. It is all managed seamlessly and is ready to support new functionality as these devices become even more capable and pervasive throughout the utility industry.

In this session we will discuss a new middleware paradigm for developing and integrating applications: metered, virtualized middleware. The virtualized attribute allows you to easily build and run new applications in the cloud reusing existing on-premise application functionality.

The metered attribute has two aspects: it provides a usage-based charge model for the middleware itself and it provides a built-in, metered charge model, much like electricity, for your new applications.

Ash Massoudi is CEO & Co-Founder of NextAxiom^® Technology. He is a proven entrepreneur and a software inventor with the vision to incrementally unify all IT assets unleashing a new wave of business automation. Massoudi founded NextAxiom^® in May 2000 and led the creation of a patented software platform that significantly eases new software development on top of existing application functionality.
